Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
the gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason
why the gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot.

Popularized by the 2005 film “V for Vendetta”, Guy Fawkes was a conspirator against the English Parliament in the 15th Century. He, among others, was involved in a conspiracy to kill King James the First, his family, and much of England’s Aristocracy by destroying the House of Lords during the ceremonial opening of Parliament. The plot was uncovered on November 5, 1605, and Guy Fawkes was caught in the early hours of the morning before the plot could be executed. Fawkes and the other conspirators were tried and executed in the months that followed.

The event was commemorated for years afterward, as a day of Thanksgiving for the England’s deliverance. Historically, celebrations included fireworks, and an effigy of Guy Fawkes (or “the guy”) being burned. Over the centuries, the holiday’s observance has evolved into “Bonfire Night” throughout the United Kingdom and her colonies. While not celebrated significantly in the United States, it’s influences can still be felt in the modern forms of Halloween and Thanksgiving.
